The first time we took Monster on a vacation with us, he was only six months old. We didn’t need to travel by plane, but we did have a five hour long drive in the car before we reached our destination.
All the way I was worried if I had packed everything I need and that I haven’t forgotten anything important. This was a time before I made use of any lists so I went on logic and memory.
It all turned out pretty well, and turned out that I hadn’t forgotten anything, but still, the stress was real.
So I decided since it’s holiday season and many families are going away on holiday, to compile a list of packing essentials for a baby.
One for each hour you will be travelling, as well as a few extra in case of any delays. And, of course, for the rest of the vacation.
If you’re making a stop to change a nappy, chances are all places are not hygienic so a changing pad comes in very handy.
Soiled nappies, clothes that have been dirtied, used wet wipes. You get the picture.
Pack a new pack of wet wipes into the car as you don’t really know how many you might be using for the length of the trip. Also pack in extra for the rest of the vacation, of course.
That’s a given.
Clothes, booties, socks or shoes.
You know roughly how many outfits your baby goes through a day so pack enough and just a little extra for a rainy day.
You might need to cover your baby up, or yourself if you’re nursing. Blankets can also be used for shading so it’s always helpful to pack in a few.
If you’ll be doing a lot of walking around, you’ll want to take a pram with. When baby wants to take a nap on the go, it will be more convenient and you won’t be stuck carrying him/her in your arms.
Sleeping arrangements are important and if your baby is used to sleeping in a crib (and still too young for a bed), you’ll want to pack it in.
Tiny baby toiletries
You don’t have to take everything with. Depending on how long your vacation is, if you’re going for a short while, buy some mini baby toiletries. Pigeon stocks an awesome product that you can use.
Depending on your babies age, you can pack in a few toys for entertainment while travelling and while on the vacation. Also a new toy comes in handy for long trips!
Obvious baby essentials
Every parent is different so you’ll know which baby essentials are important to you and your baby. I’m talking about things like:
– Bottles (if you’re not nursing)
– Sterilising liquid
– Snacks for the road
– Feeding equipment
– First-aid kit
– Baby monitor
As I said, your list of essentials could be different from the one above and you could have a few extra items to add to it. You can use it as a reference to get your packing started.
With that being said, hope you have a safe journey and a great family vacation!
