Insight from Moms | Fathima Khan

Name: Fathima KhanIMG_1246Age: 37
Children’s Ages: 9 and 4

1. Are you staying at home because of someone else’s pressure?

No. It was and is entirely my decision.

2. What was something about being a stay at home mom that surprised you?

The loneliness. I really miss the social interaction from the office.

3. What is the hardest part?

At work you have goals that you need to achieve and once you’ve achieved them you move on to your next task. At home your tasks or chores are never ending and not very challenging.

4. What is your favourite part?

The interaction with my kids. Their little stories, the extra kisses, hugs and giggles.

5. What is the biggest thing you’ve learned about yourself?

I can live with less material things and still be happy.

6. Do you ever regret this decision? {Please explain your answer.}

Yes, when my payday comes around. LOL.

7. Do you feel satisfied with this decision in general?

Yes. Nothing can put a price on it. I have been a working mom and a stay at home mom and both come with their own set of challenges. I am fortunate enough to be a stay at home mom though.

8. How has your relationship with your partner changed, if at all, from this arrangement?

Our relationship hasn’t really changed.

9. Do you sometimes feel resentment towards your working partner?

No. I made my decision without any pressure from him. He only provided support to make the decision that was right for me.

10. Do you have an equal say in financial decisions?

Yes.

11. Do you take care of all the household commitments or are they shared with your partner?

I believe that he works out and I work in. It’s not about being sexist, but it’s how we work together. We share responsibility on the weekends and the days that I don’t feel like cooking he will do it.

12. Do you think that only moms should be stay at home parents?

No. It’s a partnership and whatever works for you is what you should do. During my work career, I travelled a lot and my husband shouldered more responsibility.

13. What are your views on men that demand their partners to stay at home?

A pressure cooker explodes one time or the other. Marriage should be a partnership to work.

14. What advice can you give other moms considering staying at home?

As a working mom deciding to stay home I knew that it would be a hard job, but I still couldn’t help romanticizing it. My advice would be to go into it with your eyes open. Yes, it’s rewarding to be there for your kids, but you also miss adult company, end of month pay checks, me time, bonuses, sense of achievement and your sanity at times from being in the same 4 walls. The key is to not be a martyr. Maintain your identity and give yourself time off.

I fell for blogging because it provided a platform for people to engage with, as opposed to the person in the mirror.
