50 Shades of WTF

This past Saturday, Carisa and I took a little time out to watch the world phenomenon “50 Shades of Grey”.

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson in '50 Shades of Grey'
Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson in ’50 Shades of Grey.’

Having read all three books, I had a little bit of an idea of what to expect from the movie. To be honest, I was slightly disappointed.

They didn’t include much of the storyline of the book, with more explanations as to why Christian Grey was ’50 shades of fucked up’.

Be prepared for spoiler alerts if you haven’t watched the movie yet.

Let’s face it. ’50 Shades of Grey’ is about sex.

I can't honestly believe that her losing her virginity was that much of a pleasurable experience as well as changing her mind to suddenly turn to the hard grind of things.

There’s nothing more that could really have been expected. The shocker comes in the fact that there weren’t even many sex scenes in the movie. The ‘playroom’ wasn’t even used as much as we had come to believe in reading the book. I’m not saying the whole movie should have been shot in there but surely that’s one of the main features of the story?

Another part that bothered me was the ending. It ended with no understanding. There had been a major build up just before that with Christian slapping the crap out of Anastasia with a belt, and then the next mornings elevator scene with her leaving. And that’s the end. Let your imagination run free with the possibilities? It was disappointing. Something else should have happened after that which involved a cool down process with an easier ending to let viewers at least relax after the visual bashing they had just experienced.

It’s not the sort of movie I’d watch over and over again, plainly because I believe they could have directed it better. However, I am looking forward to the next one, in the hope that they will do a better job of portraying to the public what 50 Shades is all about. The voice of the movie was lost to me and I couldn’t really find anything to hook me on the idea that this was worth the wait.

  1. I hope the second movie is better too since I liked the second book way better than the first…
And let’s be honest the first book didn’t had much to go on to, that could be made into a movie…
